Gemiler Island (St. Nicholas Island)

Gemiler Island is located opposite Gemile Bay and its beach, a short distance from the historic village of Kayaköy. The island’s former name is St. Nicholas, and it is believed to have been used as a place of worship in the early Christian period, with the assumption that Saint Nicholas lived here. There are church ruins from the Early Christian and Byzantine periods. Frescoes in the larger churches are in good condition, and there are cistern remains near the shore.

One of the most interesting remains is a tunnel connecting two churches. Although some parts of the 500-meter tunnel have collapsed, there are 17 stations on the steps inside, representing 17 points related to the crucifixion journey. After an earthquake in AD 240–241, part of the ruins slid into the sea and now lie about two meters underwater.

Letoon Ancient Sanctuary

Letoon was the sacred cultural center and the most important sanctuary of Lycia, dedicated to the three national deities: Leto and her twin children Apollo and Artemis. Leto was also worshipped as a family deity and a guardian of tombs.

Letoon is located in a fertile plain less than 10 km south of Xanthos. Because Xanthos and Letoon are closely connected, they are often seen as a “twin site.” Xanthos–Letoon is one of Türkiye’s most remarkable archaeological areas and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Letoon has been excavated by the French Archaeological Mission since 1962, and work continues today, including restoration efforts at the Temple of Leto.

Letoon has a romantic atmosphere, largely due to still waters and lush vegetation. Turtles and frogs are often seen in the area. Unfortunately, the high water table makes excavation difficult.

To reach Letoon: from the road going from Kınık to Fethiye, turn 1 km west and continue for 5 km. It is not far from Patara, and a day trip can easily be combined with a beach and ancient-site visit from Kalkan–Kaş or Fethiye.

Finds from Letoon can be seen in the Fethiye Museum, including the important Trilingual Stele (Greek, Lycian, Aramaic), which was crucial in decoding the Lycian language.

Tlos (Ancient Lycian City)

Tlos, one of the six major (and strongest) cities of Lycia (known as “Tlawa” in Lycian inscriptions), once carried the title “The Bright Metropolis of the Lycian Nation” during the Roman period. It is among the oldest and largest settlements in Lycia. Evidence indicates Tlos was a member of the Lycian League from the 2nd century BC. In the 2nd century AD, two wealthy benefactors—one being Opramoas of Rhodiapolis—were responsible for significant building works.

Tlos was rediscovered by Charles Fellows in 1838, followed by the explorer Spratt. It lies on the eastern side of the Xanthos Valley, dominated by its acropolis. The slope features many Lycian sarcophagi and numerous house- and temple-type rock tombs carved into the hillside. Influences from multiple cultures create a fascinating architectural collage. With lush surroundings and ivy-covered ruins (especially the large bath complex), it is a romantic site and a perfect scene for painters.

The village of Yaka now lives alongside Tlos, with fields and pomegranate trees forming a beautiful landscape. Tlos is a popular destination for coastal tours, often combined with the stunning Saklıkent Gorge and Yakapark Restaurant.

Kayaköy (The Ghost Village)

Known to the ancient Greeks as Levissi, Kayaköy was a town of around 25,000 people in the early 20th century. During the population exchange agreement signed between Türkiye and Greece in 1923, the town was completely abandoned by its Greek residents. After decades of neglect and the major earthquake of 1957, Kayaköy became a ghost town. The ruins—once nominated as a UNESCO World Friendship and Peace Village—are being restored by NGOs to preserve the site as a historical settlement. If you pass through the region, this fascinating place is well worth a visit. It also inspired Louis de Bernières’ novel Birds Without Wings.

Telmessos Ancient Theatre (Fethiye)

The Roman (Telmessos) Theatre is located across the main road along Fethiye harbor. Built on a slope in a semi-circular form (sometimes described as an amphitheatre), it was constructed in the Hellenistic style and once held between 5,000 and 6,000 spectators. During the Roman period, around the 2nd century AD, a stage building was added, and the theatre remained in use until about the 7th century.

Sadly, after the 1957 earthquake, many wall blocks were removed by locals for rebuilding. Even after excavations in the 1990s, the site remained poorly preserved. Today, the Fethiye Theatre is undergoing an ambitious restoration and is expected to host open-air performances again.

Xanthos Ancient City (Capital of Lycia)

Xanthos, the capital of ancient Lycia, is especially known for funeral art that blends Lycian traditions with Hellenistic influence. Rock-cut tombs, pillar tombs, and sarcophagi are unique examples of ancient funerary architecture. In the 19th century, monuments such as the Harpy Monument, the Payava Tomb, and the Nereid Monument were taken to England and became internationally known—leading to the “Xanthian Marbles” being recognized as significant works of art and an important part of ancient art and architectural history.

Katrancı Bay (Katrancı Nature Park)

Located on the Göcek–Fethiye road and about 15 km from Göcek, this bay is covered with dense pine trees extending to the sea—showing a perfect harmony of blue and green. As a forest recreation area, it offers facilities such as showers, WC, changing cabins, drinking water, a buffet, pergolas, and parking. It is an ideal place for camping and relaxing.

İztuzu Beach (Turtle Beach)

İztuzu is a truly unique place—more than just a beach. It is a sandy stretch about 4 km long at the tip of a river delta, surrounded by pine-covered mountains. From above, it looks like a long peninsula with nothing around it but nature. In addition to its stunning unspoiled beauty, it is a major nesting area for the endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtles. If environmentalists had not taken action in the late 1980s, it could have been destroyed by large-scale holiday development.

İztuzu offers visitors the option to spend the day in the sunbed areas at each end or enjoy a quieter day in the middle. Even on busy summer days, most people stay near the facilities.

Today, several thousand people visit on a typical summer day, yet at night, nature continues as it has for thousands of years: from May to August, Caretta Caretta turtles come ashore to lay eggs. A nest usually contains around 70 eggs about 50 cm under the surface. From July to September, hatchlings emerge and try to find their way to the sea. Protected marked areas help safeguard nests from daily tourism.

Umbrellas, digging, and even lying directly on certain parts of the sand are forbidden in protected zones. Students from Pamukkale University placed specially designed metal cages over nests to prevent animals such as foxes from digging them up. Please note: dogs are not allowed on the beach. All infrastructure at İztuzu was designed for minimal environmental impact.

Sarıgerme Beach

Sarıgerme Beach, about 30 km from Göcek, has very fine sand. Operated by the municipality and shared by three hotels, it is a long, clean, and pleasant beach—great for walking. In the afternoon, the sea is often wavy.

Kabak Bay

This bay is about 60 km from Göcek. If you travel by road, it takes around 1.5 hours because the roads are very winding. Kabak Bay is one of Fethiye’s best-known bays, so it can be crowded. It is also a camping area: you can bring your own tent or rent a tent or bungalow.

Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi)

Butterfly Valley is an extraordinary natural destination, about 15 km south of Ölüdeniz and 10 km from Fethiye. It remains completely natural, untouched by modern development. The valley is formed by massive mountains dropping down to bright blue waters. The beach is popular with backpackers for camping, so you will often see tents along the shore.

There is no road to Butterfly Valley—access is only by boat or via a very challenging hike from Faralya, a beautiful Turkish village high in the mountains above. During the season, many colorful butterflies of the genus Panaxia gather here to breed. They feed on leaves and spend the rainy season in Mediterranean shrublands. By late May they appear in full form, following water sources to humid areas—eventually reaching the valley as the dry season progresses.

Saklıkent Canyon (National Park)

The canyon in Saklıkent National Park is 18 km long, about 300 meters deep, steep, and narrow. It is considered the third-longest canyon in Europe. Also known as the Hidden Valley or Lost City, it is fed by an icy stream—so cold that it can take time to adjust.

Canyons like Saklıkent are awe-inspiring natural formations found across the world. Total of 16 caves have been discovered in the rocks. The canyon is walkable after April, when melting snow from the Taurus Mountains flows through the valley into the Xanthos River. Since almost no sunlight reaches the bottom, the water stays cold even in summer.

Saklıkent is among the most visited canyons in Türkiye, attracting about 200,000–300,000 visitors each year. There are also 16 caves from the Roman period, reportedly used as shelters 2,000–3,000 years ago. Because you sometimes walk through shallow water or mud, bringing diving/water shoes is a good idea. At times you can see a strip of sky and feel like you are on another planet. You won’t feel the heavy Mediterranean heat inside the canyon.

Ölüdeniz

Located about 15 km south of Fethiye, Ölüdeniz is a fantastic destination with a wide beach under the shadow of Babadağ and a well-protected lagoon next to a lush national park. Its natural beauty attracts thousands of visitors from around the world, making it a lively place. Ölüdeniz is one of the best places in Türkiye and Europe for tandem paragliding: you glide down from pine-covered hills and see the turquoise Mediterranean below—then you understand why it is often chosen as “best beach of the year.” People from around the world come to jump from 2,000 meters to enjoy the spectacular view.
