“Where is Kaş district located?” (We can almost hear you asking!)

Then let’s start from the beginning. Kaş is a tourism center located in the province of Antalya, on the Mediterranean coast. With a 90 km coastline, Kaş is the 4th largest district of Antalya by area. The distance to Antalya city center is approximately 190 km. To the west lies Fethiye, to the north Elmalı, and to the east Demre. Facing Meis (Kastellorizo) Island in the Mediterranean, Kaş is a coastal neighbor of Greece.

Kaş

In the district, Mediterranean climate effects are seen up to 700 meters above sea level, while a continental climate is observed in the areas above. Kaş is the only place on the Mediterranean coastline where the summer daytime temperature is the lowest, and in winter the temperature never drops below 0°C. With all these features, it differs from other Mediterranean districts.

While local people earn their living in summer by operating hotels, pensions, and tour businesses, in winter they earn their living by growing vegetables, fruits, and flowers in plains, highlands, and greenhouses. In addition, beekeeping is among the important sources of income in the district. Before discussing places to visit in Kaş, we would like to briefly talk about its history.

History of Kaş

Located at one of Antalya’s farthest points, Kaş is an ancient city that draws attention with its unique natural beauties and layered historical power. As you walk through the streets, with that magical atmosphere and the historical traces that appear in front of you, you may suddenly feel like traveling back in time. To shed light on your small time journeys, we would like to share some information about the ancient city of Kaş.

Archaeological remains found in excavations proved that the first name of the ancient city of Kaş was Habesos (Habesa) in the Lycian language. Later, it was named Antiphellos. Antiphellos means “the place opposite the rocky place” or “opposite Phellos.” It is known that the city was a member of the Lycian League and served as the harbor of Phellos City located in the north, and that settlement has been open since the 6th century BC.

Antalya Kaş Transfer

With the importance of commercial assets in the Hellenistic Period and the decline of the main city Phellos, the city developed faster and became an important port city during the Roman Empire. Although Antiphellos had only one voting right in the Lycian League from the 2nd century BC, it is known as a trading city and is recognized by the coins it minted and had minted on behalf of the league.

Located at the intersection of roads covering the Caria and Lycia Regions, Antiphellos came under the region during the Anatolian campaign of the Macedonian King Alexander the Great. After Alexander’s death at a young age, the region changed hands between the Seleucids and the Ptolemies.

The ancient city gained importance in the Roman Period, and during the Byzantine Period it became a bishopric center. The city, which was exposed to Arab raids during this period, later joined the Anatolian Seljuk lands and took the name “Andifli,” which is still used locally today. After the collapse of the Anatolian Seljuk State, the administration of the city passed to the Tekeogulları Principality, and during the time of Yıldırım Bayezid, the Ottoman Empire incorporated the district into its lands.

Places to Visit in Kaş (Historical Sites)

Antiphellos Ancient Theater

We are talking about the Antiphellos Ancient Theater, where you can reach from almost anywhere in the city and watch a magnificent sunset.

At the top of our Kaş places-to-visit list, this ancient theater dates back to the 1st century AD and although it was slightly damaged by earthquakes, it has been restored in accordance with its original form. The breathtaking view of this theater—having the sea at your feet and greeting Meis Island—can already make it special, but it has an even more unique feature: Antiphellos Ancient Theater is the only theater in Anatolia that faces the sea. In addition, in the ancient city there are also house-type king tombs carved into natural rocks, dating back to the 4th century BC, about 3.5 meters high.

One of the must-do activities here is watching the sunset. You will enjoy stunning sunset photos for your archive. We believe everyone should experience it at least once. It is open 24 hours and entrance is free.

With a seating capacity for 4,000 spectators, concerts, festivals, and various events are sometimes organized in the ancient theater. We recommend checking event dates while planning your holiday. We continue our Kaş places-to-visit list with the King’s Tomb.

King’s Tomb (Lion Sarcophagus)

The Lion Sarcophagus, also known as the King’s Tomb by local people, dates back to the 4th century BC and is located right at the top of Uzun Çarşı Hill in Kaş. There is an 8-line inscription written in the Lycian language, but since it cannot be read, it is unknown who the tomb belongs to. The sarcophagus depicts a man and a woman; the man is positioned in a way that will not harm the body, resting on the left fold on the right side. Additionally, a standing female figure in a long coat is visible. Lion reliefs are also carved on both sides of the lid.

As one of the most central historical sites, it is impossible to come to Kaş without seeing the King’s Tomb, because it welcomes you with all its grandeur right at the top of the bazaar. If you want to add it to your photo albums, we recommend going early in the morning. Both during the day and in the evening, it can be quite difficult to take a photo due to crowds.

Simena Ancient City (Kaleköy)

On our list of places to visit in Kaş is the Simena Ancient City, known today as Kaleköy. Simena is a small Lycian coastal town that has survived since the 4th century BC. Kaleköy is one of the last settlements that can be reached only by sea. This makes it a very special place and offers a unique experience. Located within the Kekova Special Environmental Protection Area, Simena Ancient City is registered as a 1st-degree archaeological site.

To reach this village of about 40 households, you need to use boats departing from Üçağız and Kaş.

When you arrive in Kaleköy, you will be welcomed by the warm local people and shopkeepers. You will see people selling handicrafts, various herbs, spices, honey, jam, and similar products in front of their doors. Supporting the villagers—whose only income sources are tourism and fishing—should be at the top of the Kaleköy to-do list.

There is a real thing called the Kaleköy view. The best address to enjoy the view and add new ones to your amazing photos is Kaleköy Castle.

Kaleköy Castle

The castle is located in the upper part of Kaleköy. Starting from the beach, you reach it via a steep stepped path. When you go up, you will see many sarcophagi in Kaleköy. Next to the castle, there is a stone building that was once used as a madrasa; it was restored by Rahmi Koç and is used as a school by locals today.

The first thing you will notice is the ancient theater carved into natural rock, with 7 seating rows and a capacity of 300 people—one of the important remains of Simena Ancient City. This is the smallest theater of Lycia. Other remains include water cisterns, rock tombs, ruins of temples, and a place of worship that was used as a church and later as a mosque.

Kaleköy Castle has a unique view that will make you feel very small and satisfy your soul with its endless blue. Looking toward the shore, you can see the Lycian sarcophagi in the sea, which have become the symbol of Simena Ancient City. Other remains include bath ruins, Lycian-style rock tombs and sarcophagi, and Roman wall ruins. The castle also has a large necropolis area. Only one of the sarcophagi in the necropolis has an inscription in the Lycian language.

One of the tastiest activities you can do in Kaleköy Ancient City is tasting the delicious ice cream made from the village’s own goat milk. On the short walk up to the castle, you will see small cafés. Thanks to the fun behavior and pleasant chats of the shopkeepers competing to make you taste their ice cream with tiny spoons, your journey becomes even more enjoyable. All cafés are run by local villagers; it’s up to you which one you choose, but you definitely should not leave Kaleköy without eating ice cream.

Kekova Sunken City

We continue with places to visit. This time we turn our route to the blue waters of Kekova and start telling about the Sunken City of Kekova, which you can reach only by boat.

Kekova Sunken City is a small rocky island located off the coast of Kaleköy and Üçağız near the Demre district of Antalya. There is no settlement on the 4.5 km² Kekova island. The region where the island is located is known as “Kekova.” You can only reach it with excursion and tour boats.

The Lycians built their houses by carving large rocks. As you circle the island, you will see Lycian houses whose front walls were submerged due to major earthquakes, while stairs and many side walls are still standing.

Because of earthquakes, the island tilted backward and a narrow strait formed. This strait is now called Aquarium Bay. Over time, the waters filling the land through this strait formed Tersane Bay. In ancient times, the bay used for shipbuilding became a safe harbor for sailors seeking shelter from bad weather on the open sea. When you arrive here by tour boat, you will take a short break.

Don’t forget to bring your sea goggles when you come to Tersane Bay! Because there will be harbor ruins waiting for you underwater. After a short swim of about 5 minutes, you can reach the shore, listen to waves crashing on rocks and the sound of wind, and capture moments of the open Mediterranean you might not otherwise see. The one thing you must bring for this small adventure is water shoes. Don’t forget that scorching hot ground awaits you on land! We are not done yet in Tersane Bay…

It is possible to see the remains of the ancient city of Dolichiste in Tersane Bay. There are towers, harbors, and port structures dating to the Hellenistic Period. Additionally, three large churches and two chapels were identified. Archaeologists state that approximately 150–200 residences, workshops, cisterns, and unique textures have been identified on the island so far. The most visible ruins include a bath used for treatment and cleaning, a door thought to belong to a church, and a cross above the door.

Among our list of places to visit in Kaş—where nature and history intertwine—the most enchanting is Kekova. Some tour companies use glass-bottom boats so you can observe the underwater ruins. Make sure the boat you take has this feature, because swimming is forbidden in the Sunken City! You wouldn’t want to miss these beauties buried under turquoise waters…

Aperlai Ancient City

There is no restriction on visiting days or hours at Aperlai Ancient City. You can tour it for free every day.

There are many ancient city ruins in Kaş villages and along the Kaş–Fethiye road. If this is not enough and you want a bit more history, here is the continuation of our Kaş places-to-visit list:

Patara Ancient City (Patara Ruins)

One of the places to visit between Kaş and Fethiye, Patara is located in Kaş’s Gelemiş district and is 40 km from the district center. The city was used as the largest maritime trade port during the Lycian period. In the area, there are a small ancient theater (partly restored), a bath, an entrance gate, a colonnaded street, and sarcophagi. In recent excavations, the world’s oldest lighthouse was revealed.

The entrance fee to Patara Ancient City is 30 TL, and the museum card is valid.

Xanthos Ancient City (Xanthos)

Another place to visit between Kaş and Fethiye is Xanthos Ancient City. The ancient city is 46 km from the district center and is within the borders of Kınık Town. Once the capital of Lycia, the area is a 2nd-degree protected site. It was protected by UNESCO in 1988, and the first excavations were carried out in 1838 by Charles Fellows. Some important artifacts are exhibited in London. Due to the uniqueness of the Lycian civilization and the importance of the findings, it was included in UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List.

Istlada Ancient City

A small but impressive ancient city located in Kapaklı Village. Access is provided via the Demre–Kaş highway. Entrance is free.

Isinda Ancient City (Belenli Ancient City)

Located on the hill of Belenli Village. It is 13 km from the district center. Entrance is free.

Kandyba Ancient City

Located 13 km north of the district center, next to Gendeve (Çataloluk) village. Entrance is free.

We complete the Kaş places-to-visit list here and end our magical journey through history. Our next journey will return to the present and get lost in the unique turquoise waters of the district. For those asking “Where can we swim in Kaş?” and those who want to decorate their photos with the most beautiful shades of blue—here is the Kaş Beaches List!

Kaş Beaches List

Küçük Çakıl Beach

Located in the center of Kaş district. It’s called Küçük Çakıl Beach, but don’t imagine a long beach—on the contrary, it’s a small public beach where you just need to take your towel and shouldn’t bring many personal belongings.

In the Küçük Çakıl area, there are private businesses lined along the seaside. It is possible to rent sunbeds and umbrellas by choosing one of the venues that provide both restaurant/café and beach services. During the season, especially in busy periods such as public holidays, you should choose a place and rent a sunbed/umbrella one day in advance, because finding a spot is almost impossible!

We call these places beaches, but to enter the sea you need to use stairs or small piers built on rocks. If you want to enter from the shore and have your feet touch the ground, you should use the small section allocated as the public beach. The public beach section does not have shower areas, toilets, or changing cabins.

What makes Küçük Çakıl special is that it is on the right side of the public beach.

Büyük Çakıl Beach

One of Kaş’s paradise bays, about a 10–15 minute walk from the district center, welcoming you with its turquoise color. You can reach the beach in 5 minutes by using minibuses departing from the district center every hour or by your own car.

As its name suggests, the beach consists of quite large pebbles. You can choose one of the facilities and rent sunbeds and umbrellas. Facilities may have different practices. The one we preferred set a daily spending limit of 50 TL per person—meaning you need to eat or drink something worth 50 TL. The food was good, and breakfast was open buffet. All alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks are available. No extra fee is requested for sunbeds, umbrellas, and parking. There are shower areas, toilets, and changing cabins.

Do not forget: due to coastal law, you can use the beach and swim without paying any fee as long as you do not use the services of the businesses!

One of the things to do in Kaş is watching the sunset at Büyük Çakıl Beach. At sunset, restaurants on the beach set their tables by the sea. Having dinner while breathing in this atmosphere is definitely one of the most enjoyable activities.

İnceboğaz

There is a facility in İnceboğaz, named because it is located at the narrowest part of the Çukurbağ Peninsula, and you need to pay a small fee to use its services. If you just want to lay your towel and swim, don’t want sunbeds/umbrellas, or don’t want to take a shower, you can swim in the beautiful sea without paying anything. Remember: due to coastal law, you do not need to pay to use the sea!

There are beaches on both sides of İnceboğaz, and both are managed by the same business. The side facing the open sea is windy and wavy. The side facing the marina has warmer water and is almost motionless—“like a sheet” is exactly the expression. Because the sea is so calm and shallow, it has become a frequent spot for families with children.

You can reach İnceboğaz quickly by your own car or by minibuses departing from Kaş center. The beach has showers, toilets, changing cabins, and parking services.

Limanağzı

In Limanağzı, which can be reached only by small boats departing from Kaş center, there are 4 businesses. Boats drop you off one by one at the place you want. However, during busy periods such as holiday breaks, the bays may be full, boats may go at full capacity, and you may have to get off at another available bay.

Hidayet Bay

If you ask “Which is the most beautiful sea in Kaş?” here is the answer: Hidayet Bay! When Kaş places to visit are mentioned, the first thing that comes to our mind is swimming in Hidayet Bay. Turquoise, endless deep waters, ecological diversity that makes you feel like you are in an aquarium…

Unfortunately, deeply upsetting events happened in our country regarding Hidayet Bay. With petition campaigns also ending without results, Hidayet Bay moved away from being a free natural area and quickly turned into a “Beach Club” appearance. This unique bay also suffered from human impact. Thanks to stone houses built around the bay, the perfect harmony of green and blue was once again colored by concrete!

Hidayet Bay, one of the richest points of the district in terms of ecological diversity, has become the favorite spot of diving enthusiasts. You should definitely not come here without your goggles and snorkel. Even if you don’t dive, you will be amazed when you look underwater with your goggles. Sea plants, various fish, Caretta carettas, squid… These are just a few of the sea creatures you can see here.
